Melancholy-minded artist/producer lookoutbeats has with his debut mixtape delivered eight tracks of pure pop-trap goodness. Keep a lookout (no pun intended) for Best Wishes dropping in a couple of days and stream the single here. EDIT: Stream the project in full here.
Sometimes warping his voice with a thick, melodically rich coating of autotune and other times honing in on the rawer aspects of his voice, lookout proves himself to be far more than merely a serviceable vocalist. His songwriting is exceptional too, his hook on ‘Runaway’ is an immediate standout as it kicks the track’s pace up a notch and brings increased attention to the warm, beautifully layered harmonies that he offers in bulk. The project’s sonic versatility may not be immense, but every song sports a sorrowful synth landscape that brings colour to a mixtape rife with self-loathing or whimsical lyrical topics. There are some guest vocalists and producers here (Donovan Wayne, Mos Eliot, $hadowstar) all of whom mesh nicely with the core sound, but the best tracks here (‘TwentyDays, ‘Happii’) are created solely by lookout himself.
By handling the executive producer role himself, lookout is able to personally curate the sequencing of what may prove to be his most vital product. Time and time again here he proves that he has the talent and charisma to pull off a full project completely solo, and with beats this good in tow his ever-expanding musical arsenal is virtually unstoppable.
