Born and raised in Palm Beach, Florida, Milli Merg is a passionate twenty six year old rapper and producer seeking to carve his own lane on his latest project Mergology.
‘Lose It All’ is a solid introduction to Merg’s sound, not only because he produces the floaty, synth-laden beat but because his comforting, melodious delivery offers such a clear-cut representation of his musical journey thus far: ‘I was a young n****, getting paper dawg. Bitches hated, I couldn’t save her dawg. I don’t give a fuck, now I’m hated dawg. I would have never think I’d lose it all’. It’s one hell of an opening statement, and one that sticks with you the further you progress into Mergology. ‘Toast Up’ (also produced by Merg under the name OnlyTheFlyest) is a more triumphant number featuring a hyperactive, less calculated flow that allows the rapper to experiment with a rougher cadence and more hedonistic lyrics.
The songs where Merg does both the rapping and production are generally the best here. ‘Man of the Year’ is a slow, hypnotic interlude with a healthy dose of autotune lathered onto his vocals. ‘Feeling Woozy’ packs brags by the ton, but also sees Merg spend a fair amount of time regretting his past actions and bitterly cross-examining the long, arduous road that has led him to this point. Finally, ‘Tippin’ is a huge banger that doesn’t consist of much more than it’s blaring hook. There’s quite a few songs here with radio potential, ‘Blue Faces’ is the most cutthroat track on the project and yet also one of the most anthemic while ‘Turn Up’ is really only a visual away from being a definitive summer smash.
It’s unknown as to which of these styles, if any, Merg will commit fully to in the future, but what is certain is that his potential to be a truly standout artist in the FL rap scene manifests here in full force. Listen to the project in full here.
