Operating under many names and within many groups, Mars’ talent shines through in every circumstance. Her music is uniquely calming, operating in a dreamlike state that blends the singer’s gentle murmurs with the soft, transcendent instrumentals.
Writing most of her music to a serene, calming atmosphere, Mars creates and releases music at her own pace and impresses each and every time. Her SoundCloud currently contains four songs, each released within the last ten months and steadily increasing the artist’s profile in the process. ‘By My Side’ is a major highlight, featuring luxurious synth pop production fed through a cloud rap lens. ‘Today’ is a more typical sound for the current hip-hop climate, incorporating emo rap tropes into a more wholesome, fulfilling piece of music.
Mars’ abilities as a singer and songwriter have only grown since the release of last November’s ‘Better Off’, and indeed her latest offering ‘Follow U Home’ is her loveliest song to date. Mirroring some of the best bedroom pop of the past decade, the track is a perfect stylistic endpoint for Mars’ current career trajectory (although I doubt that this is the singer’s final evolution). Her approach to collaboration is admirable too; as ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ (her collaboration with the UK’s FXLLEN), has shown. Working with an artist occupying such a different musical space could have been a challenge, but Mars was able to rise to it easily and delivered one of her finest, most passionate verses to date.
I cannot recommend Mars’ music enough, as her skills are improving with every new drop and her creative direction is clearly heading down a musically (and aesthetically) pleasing road. I wouldn’t be surprised if her career takes off big time over the next year or so.
