Bleachh should be an artist that requires no introduction for regular readers of this blog, but his accomplishments must be celebrated nonetheless. Fresh off of his not even a month old EP 01, the Toronto rapper and singer-songwriter continues to reinvent himself with increasingly daring and genre-pushing pop music.
‘FleX Talk’, a collaboration with Varsity captain Jackie Platinum, features not only Bleachh’s most adventurous production to date but also hits the ground running as an excellent piece of pop music. The glitchier ‘DigiBandzzz’ that dropped just over a week ago displayed the chaos that can ensue when the Hurenpop member embraces the most intense elements of one of underground rap’s most exciting scenes, while his new collaboration with Jackie is a smoother, more traditionally pleasing slice of dance-pop. Rhythmically this one of the most irresistible tracks to ever touch the rapper’s SoundCloud, it’s booming percussion pulling the listener into a trance even without the Bleachh/Jackie vocal chemistry. Both artists play to their strengths here, the former distorting his voice in a similar fashion to the mega-hit ‘Ball Like Highschool’. In many ways, this song suggests that the brightest future for Bleachh would be one where all of his music carried the same colossal, metallic groove that is found here.
Considering that the rapper’s older music can now only be found on streaming services, it’s not hard to imagine a future where songs in this style become the new norm for the Canadian artist. I would welcome any further pursuit of this sound, as its replay value is incredibly high and it may end up as one of my favourites when the end of the year rolls around (and not soon enough, might I add). Additionally, I would love to hear further collaboration between Bleachh and Jackie (Platinum Bleach, perhaps?), as the handful of songs that we’ve received so far don’t quite scratch the itch that their undeniably harmonious songwriting brings forth.
