It may be over a month since it first dropped but ‘Awake’, the latest single from the multi-talented Jounin featuring an appearance from Canadian artist Soma, is just as relevant in the icier month of October as it was on its initial release date.
Sporting production from Varsity member Curtains, the song is a glitzy, synth-heavy banger dripping with euphoric energy. ‘Give me the love, give me the hate’ screams Jounin on the hook, his vocals mixed beautifully but also packing a serious punch. His performances on the song’s first verse features some awesome harmonies that intensify the slickness of his delivery. Soma’s verse is even more melodic, his lyrics filled with sentiments about success and having to cut negative energy off on your way to the top. ‘I’m a legend in the making, thought you would make it but you’re faking’, he announces halfway through his guest appearance. The entire theme of the song presents a realisation of self-worth, of waking up one day to realise that the numerous obstacles presented by success are easy to overcome if you have the right mindset. Clearly, the three artists involved in this song possess such a view of their careers, as they have created the perfect anthem for disregarding hate and embracing that which will further their individual musical legacies. If the autumn months are getting you down and you’re in need of a buzz, give this song a whirl.
