A youthful creative with some groundbreaking ideas, Nari is an artist to keep your eye on in the coming months. Their new song ‘Necromancer’ is out now and can be streamed here. Their 108MICS exclusive ‘Trap’ can be streamed here.
Hey! It’s great to have you on the blog, I hope you’re keeping well. Firstly, tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from and what is an average day like for you?
I’m super glad to be on this blog! I was born and raised in South Africa, most days I go to school and make music here in my bedroom. I’m always trying to keep it as relaxed as possible!
The music on your SoundCloud only goes back to August, a month in which you dropped your VioletWRLD EP. Have you really only been making music for a few months?
No actually, I’ve been making music for close to 2 years. I clear my soundcloud every once in a while when i go through different stages with my music, this nari era has lasted for about 4 months now and I couldn’t be happier with it.
Tell us about how and why you got into making the music that you do? Did you have any huge inspirations at the time?
Originally I made trap metal. I got fairly big but some personal issues came up and I was forced to take a 3 month hiatus. When I got back I started making emo trap type music with my long-time friend Phixel (love her 2 death) and it took off from there. Phixel is the person who got me into the hyperpop scene and from there I’ve met countless people who inspire and influence my sound. The ones I remember from the top of my head are luvox, 8485, alice gas, phixel, bleachh, shyburial, kid trashh and ramunechips. All my biggest inspirations!!
You’re part of a handful of collectives, how did you become involved in these groups and has being part of smaller musical communities benefited your career thus far?
Lets work down the list! I got involved in Team Rocket through lowlygod, he’s been a friend to me for a few months and I couldn’t ask for a better one. He reached out to me and i could NOT pass up the opportunity. I’ve made some lovely friends from Team Rocket and I couldn’t ask for a better clique. Demon Pop was always welcoming to me. I met the people over there at a concert i performed at and we hit it off from there. I was iffy about joining at first but its been a while and i don’t see why i hesitated at the start. Team Girl Scouts is a collective I started with the help of ev333 and Nachito. It originally started as a weird pipe dream of mine but so far its been going fairly smoothly. I honestly consider it more of a friend group than anything else. Connecting people and making good music together is such an important aspect of growth and i love that everybody in Girl Scouts is on board with the dream.
Your new track ‘Necromancer’ feels like your most accomplished to date, especially lyrically. What is your next intended drop and will any of these tracks appear on a project in the future?
You know I cant give anything away but I can tell you I have some amazing features coming with my friends. My lips are sealed.
Who are your favourite artists/producers to collaborate with? Also, will we see more of you rapping on your own production in the future?
My all time favorite collabs so far have been with Phixel, Buttonmaker, ev333, Will Rosey and Nachito. They’re all super talented and I’m shocked they arent famous by now. You’ll definitely be hearing some more of my production soon. I keep most of my producer stuff in a vault because I’m insecure but I’m getting way more confident with it!
Why did you choose the name Nari?
Its a shortened version of Inari Ōkami. They’re normally associated with prosperity and entertainment and i thought it was fitting considering who i am.
Lastly, is there anything else that you wanted to promote? Or any shoutouts that you wanted to do, if you like. The floor is yours, my friend!
Well firstly I wanted to thank you for having me here on your blog! This has been a wonderful experience and I hope we can work on more releases and posts together soon!! I’d love to shoutout everyone I mentioned in my answers along with the entirety of Team Rocket, Demon Pop, Team Girl Scouts, and Hurenpop. They’ve all helped me out immensely and I wouldn’t be where i am today without them.
