On his newest banger, New York’s Josen tackles another colossal drill beat with exhilarating results.
Josen’s 2020 was full of great music, but none were more effective and memorable than ‘Heart of Da City’. Inspired by the increasingly popular sounds of UK drill, Snake’s beat was the perfect backdrop for the rapper’s hardest song to date. Josen keeps the same energy on ‘Regardless’, an even more convincing recreation of the tense, menacing atmosphere now found in drill on a worldwide scale. Really, it should come as no surprise to anyone that New York’s best artists have this sound on lock after the enormous success that its drill scene has encountered over the past two years, and it’s clear with this newest track that Josen is well and truly at the forefront of pushing the sound on.
With production this time from Crayons, Josen had adopted a faster, more urgent flow here. The beat is suitably paranoid and the rapper’s raspy voice suits it to a tee, he really brought an intense energy with this one. As usual his hooks are on point: ‘Gas pack on me like I farted, I’m getting money regardless’, and the short, explosive verse doesn’t let up even slightly. If the intention here was to barrage listeners with one of his most savage rap performances to date, Josen has absolutely succeeded. This was a great way to begin his 2021, and I can’t wait to see what else he has in store.
