A sprightly alt-rock banger, Cam Kron’s ‘Over??’ provides an authentic take on a genre that’s sadly absent in the oversaturated world of 2000’s scene nostalgia.
For a start, this song’s instrumental is legit. The looped guitar may not be anything new, but the live sound of the drums gives the song a satisfying crispness that couldn’t be replicated by anyone unfamiliar with this style of music. As a whole, it’s the perfect platform for Cam to make it feel like ‘it’s 2001 again’, an ambition that is thoroughly fulfilled. His voice is actually pretty raw on this song, there’s definitely manipulation of some kind happening to it but the end product is an emotional release that vividly recalls a day where pop punk and emo bands ruled the airwaves unchallenged. And yet despite the massive influx of cash-grab searching artists leaning into these genres thanks to their return in popularity, artists like Cam have managed to create a remarkably faithful sound that never at any point sounds like a rehash or a bastardisation.
Indeed, ‘Over??’ is as pure a re-interpretation of 2000’s rock aesthetics as you’re likely to find. I know from speaking to him that Cam has been in bands that made music pretty similar to this song, so it’s surprising that he’s so capable of aping the best aspects of the scene from a deeply nostalgic, appreciative perspective. Cam has always been at his best when making melodic music, and in that sense this is one of his greatest musical products to date.
