More so than anything else that they’ve released, cnri’s ‘lightroom’ is a product that rewards attention to minute, almost painstaking details. Brimming with tension from the outset, the song is a labour of love from another of Marble Club’s incredible young talents.
A eerie dirge of a track, ‘lightroom’ thrives on an ominous guitar loop heaped with a myriad of intense, noisy effects. Although the opening of the track is fairly skeletal, once cnri’s vocals enter the fray the crushing weight of the song is immediately apparent. The morbid lyrics contribute heavily to this feeling: ‘Dismembered in my bedroom, letting blood so I can stay true’. cnri mentioned on Twitter that they didn’t feel good making this song, and that’s a shame because it’s a very effective portrayal of heartbreak and battling painful memories/intrusive thoughts. This is a brilliantly produced, staggeringly textured track that hits incredibly hard at all the right moments while also giving cnri’s lyrics the breathing room that they need to really sink in. I sincerely hope that their future output will be more enjoyable to them from a creative standpoint, as based on this song and the equally great (yet wholly different) ‘put me 2 sleep’ they have an enormous amount of talent that I can’t wait to see used in more music throughout 2021.
