In the midst of one of his greatest musical runs to date, uglyboy places his heart firmly on his sleeve with ‘iseethruu’.
The latest in a long line of self-produced emotive bangers, ‘iseethruu’ continues the lyrical traditions established by the Ohio artist’s past work. The song speaks of his frustration at the way he is being treated by either a friend or romantic partner, and thanks to the lyrics being published in full in the SoundCloud description it’s easier than ever to gain an insight into his mind at the time they were written. uglyboy has always been open about his feelings, having made songs about a variety of topics including an unwillingness to open up to a new lover and feeling trapped by the confines of one’s own mental health, but this track definitely feels like his most honest work yet. As a portrayal of an emotionally conflicted person suffering from a one-sided relationship, it is likely to be very close to home for some.
The production here is definitely some of his best ever, too. The brief breakbeat interlude before the first hook is just one moment that took me by surprise, but the entire song really feels like an emotional journey. The melodies are more subtle here than on some of the beats that he’s worked on recently, focusing more on the power of his drums than the very melody- focused ‘Fragile’. As a result, the massive refrain of ‘I think this time you crossed the line, you left me hanging out to dry’ sounds incredibly cathartic, the vindication in the singer’s voice leaking through the vocal effects and making for a very intense, cathartic chorus.
At only two minutes and change, this song is brief but endlessly replayable. Entirely created by uglyboy himself, ‘iseethruu’ achieves its lofty goal of surpassing hits like ‘Snow White’ and ‘Fragile’. As it stands it’s probably the best song that he’s made to date, and that’s a huge achievement from an artist that always prioritises the way that his music makes people feel as much as the way that it sounds.
