I’ve covered the various members of $econd Nature many times on this blog, but I’ve only covered their collective material once before. With their new project Season 1, the American rap trio (alongside their extended production family) have crafted some of their most fleshed-out songs to date.
As most of its five tracks feature the triple vocal attack of VCIDHIGH, Cam Kron and Chew, Season 1 is undeniably the group’s definitive release. No song here lasts much longer than two minutes, and each hits incredibly hard. ‘Back It Up’ sounds the closest to something from the collective’s last release Drip or Be Dropped, with the added bonus of VCIDHIGH’s gruff delivery this time around. Where Cam Kron’s verses were previously the most exciting aspect of the collective’s tapes, here all three rappers reach a stylistic apex. Chew has never sounded more vicious, tearing up closer ‘Hilfiger’ in breathtaking fashion.
The production is consistently great here, too. ‘Conjoined Thoughts’’ production is akin to the soundtrack of a survival horror game, the song’s overwhelming tension dripping from its crushing atmosphere. ‘Hit List’ is a lurching banger that encourages some crazy double time flows and features a characteristically awesome Bone Thugs-aping verse from Cam. Lyrically these guys are going for very grim content, rapping largely in horror-tinged brags that leap out at the listener thanks to an excellent mixing job.
Overall, this is a wonderful set of tracks that at such a bite-size length should be fairly impossible to ignore for any fan of more technically-inclined trap music with more than a slightly gritty edge.
Listen to the project in full here.
